# Create a workspace

A workspace is a shared home for a team's documents and files. It holds the people you invite, the folders you file things into, your own domains like `docs.acme.com`, and your logo and colours.

Documents you publish outside a workspace keep working exactly as they do now. Nothing moves into a workspace until you put it there.

> **Note: Before you start**
>
> You need a Markdrop account. You can own up to 10 workspaces, and be a member of others that people invite you to.

## Create it

### Open New workspace
In the sidebar, under **Workspaces**, choose **New workspace**. You can also go to [Settings › Workspaces](https://markdrop.in/settings/workspaces) and choose **New workspace**.

### Name it
Type a name, like `Acme Docs`, and choose **Create workspace**. Names can be up to 80 characters, and you can change the name later.

### Follow Get set up
The new workspace opens with a **Get set up** checklist: name your workspace, invite your team, add your first file, and (optional) use your own domain. Each step ticks itself off when it's done. You can hide the checklist; it stays hidden on that device.

You are the workspace's **Owner**. Only the owner can delete it.

## Add things to it

Open the workspace and choose **New**:

| Choice | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| **New document** | Write Markdown straight into the workspace or the folder you're in. |
| **Upload** | Add videos, PDFs, pages and documents. You can also drop files onto the workspace. |
| **New folder** | Make a folder here. See [Folders](https://docs.markdrop.in/workspaces/folders). |
| **Add existing…** | File something you already published. |

When you add existing items, you choose **Who can open them**:

- **Keep as they are**: each item keeps its own setting. An item open to "Only people added" stays that way, even inside the workspace.
- **Acme team** (your workspace's name): anyone in the workspace can open them after signing in. Nobody else can, link or not.

New items start with the workspace's default. You set that with [Privacy](https://docs.markdrop.in/workspaces/privacy).

## Invite your team

Admins invite people. Choose **Share** at the top of the workspace, or open the workspace's settings and choose **Invite people** on the **People** tab. See [Members and roles](https://docs.markdrop.in/workspaces/members-and-roles).

## Leave or delete a workspace

Both live in the workspace's settings, on the **Advanced** tab.

- **Leave workspace** is for everyone except the owner. You lose access right away. Files you added stay in the workspace, and you still own them. To come back, an admin has to invite you again.
- **Delete workspace** is for the owner only. You type the workspace's name to confirm.

Deleting a workspace removes its members, folders and domains. It doesn't delete anyone's files: each file goes back to the person who owns it, with the same link and analytics. Anything that was open to the team becomes "Only people added", and your domain stops serving.

> **Warning**
>
> Deleting a workspace can't be undone. If you only want to stop serving your domain for a while, detach the domain instead. See [Put your workspace on your own domain](https://docs.markdrop.in/workspaces/custom-domain#take-a-domain-off-the-air).

## Next steps

**[Invite people](https://docs.markdrop.in/workspaces/members-and-roles)**

Choose who can view, who can edit, and who runs the workspace.

**[Choose who can open things](https://docs.markdrop.in/workspaces/privacy)**

Pick Open, Team or Locked for the whole workspace.

**[Use your own domain](https://docs.markdrop.in/workspaces/custom-domain)**

Serve the workspace from an address like docs.acme.com.
